Stories of Transformation

Denis Wambede

Denis Wambede

The team at Silent Cafe first met Denis Wambede in 2022. At the time, the 30-year-old Deaf coffee farmer who hails from Budadiri in Sironko was working on a family plot planted with aging coffee trees, some nearly as old as he was. Yields were declining and income was minimal. The garden reflected years of limited reinvestment and little technical guidance.

Through farmer mobilization efforts led by Silent Cafe, Denis began connecting with other coffee farmers. He attended awareness sessions and gained exposure to better agronomic practices. For the first time, he felt confident that he could rebuild his farm rather than abandon it.

In 2023, Denis planted his first batch of Arabica seedlings. With limited technical knowledge, he relied on peer learning and farmer leadership within the network. Today, his one-acre garden is transforming. The field now combines pruned older trees with two-year-old coffee plants that are greening the land. This season, the young trees are flowering for the first time, signalling the beginning of renewed productivity.

Rather than cutting down all the old trees at once and risking total income loss for two to three years, Denis adopted a phased approach. He selectively removed some aging trees, planted new seedlings, and gradually pruned the remaining older trees to sustain partial harvests while the young plants mature.

Encouraged by his progress, Denis plans to expand coffee production onto an additional three acres of land given to him by his grandparents. The plot is located near his current garden, his goal is steady growth, guided by practical learning and long-term sustainability.

Hajarah Nandudu

Hajarah Nandudu

Hajarah Nandudu has been the focal person for Silent Cafe’s farmer mobilization activities helping Deaf coffee farmers in Sironko District to join our network of model coffee farmers who we support with agronomy training, coffee market access and other extension services.

Raised in a coffee farming community, Hajarah understands first-hand how coffee sustains families. Her own education was funded through coffee proceeds and today the same crop supports the education of her four children.

Since partnering with Silent Cafe, Hajarah has played a central role in organizing Deaf farmers across the district. She mobilizes farmers to attend meetings, conducts familiarization visits, and ensures consistent communication between farmers and the Silent Cafe team. Her coordination has strengthened participation in agronomy training and improved farmers’ access to technical knowledge.

As a Deaf woman, Hajarah works closely with local leadership structures, including disability support groups and Local Council representatives to ensure Deaf farmers are included in community-level coffee activities and trainings. She bridges communication gaps and advocates for full participation in the coffee value chain.

Her leadership demonstrates the critical role local leaders play in building an inclusive and sustainable sourcing model. By supporting and empowering women like Hajarah, Silent Cafe reinforces a simple principle: women must be at the forefront of the coffee value chain because inclusion strengthens both community and business.

Joseph Asali

Joseph Asali

Joseph Asali is a respected Persons with Disabilities community leader and a key partner in Silent Cafe’s efforts to empower vulnerable coffee farmers in Sironko District. As both a coffee farmer and a community representative, he plays a strategic role in strengthening inclusion within the local coffee value chain.

Joseph serves as a liaison between the disability community and the Silent Cafe team. Through his leadership, farmers are mobilized to participate in agronomy training sessions, community visits and peer support engagements. His established relationships and credibility within the locality enables deeper outreach and stronger participation among farmers who might otherwise remain excluded.

Silent café’s work with local leaders like Joseph reinforces a critical principle in our model: sustainable coffee production depends on community ownership and the knowledge that local leadership is the bridge to inclusion. The involvement of local leaders like Joseph ensures that coffee agronomy training, farm support and innovation are grounded in real agricultural practice that coffee farmers are undertaking within their communities.

In addition to coordinating farmer engagement, Joseph continues to expand his own coffee activities. With plans underway to integrate beekeeping into existing agronomy initiatives, he is preparing to serve as a demonstration farmer, modelling diversification and resilience for others in his community.

Joseph’s leadership reflects the strength that inclusive community structures bring to sustainable coffee production.
